There are two general appraisal options available: Machinery/Equipment appraisals are normally reported using the "Summary Appraisal" format (also defined by USPAP) in lieu of the much more detail oriented "Self Contained Appraisal," which saves costs. Specific backup data for a Summary Appraisal is available by special request. Equipment valuations may be "Desktop Appraisals" wherein the appraisal is made at the appraiser’s office without inspection of the equipment, based upon data provided by the owner. This can dramatically reduce the cost. Or, it can be a regular valuation wherein the appraiser inspects and documents the equipment, and then completes the valuation report. Shareholder disputesIf a dispute qualifies as a “dissenting shareholder”, a valuation is usually needed at “Fair Value” vs. Fair Market Value. Fair Value is generally defined as the net equity value that would be obtained upon a sale of the entire company vs. a sale of a minority interest.
