American ValueMetrics Corp was founded in 2003 as a "spin-off" of Barney & Associates, Inc., a business brokerage and business and equipment appraisal firm which has been operating since 1983.

The purpose of the spin-off was to address several developments which have occurred in the industry:

  1. As the market for small businesses has become more and more nationalized by the development of the internet, it requires appraisers to be able to deal with this much broader market to develop defensible opinions of value.
  2. Tremendous improvements in information technology has allowed "streamlining" the information collection process by use of the internet, most especially e-mail and attached documents thus enabling the lowering of costs to the client.
  3. Comparison Sales data is now available from a variety of sources, especially to those who have sophisticated information management systems. With economies of scale, this too can result in lower costs to the client.
  4. The need to reconcile machinery and equipment values with conventional business appraisals has become more and more necessary as many small companies move towards technology in lieu of labor as an instrument of production.

Based upon these observations, Gerald W. Barney, the President and CEO, who has had a long career in business analysis and appraisal, developed a sophisticated algorithm (methodology for solving a problem in a finite number steps) for business valuations based upon systems theory, rather than the heretofore conventional linear approach. Closely linked with the systems theory is the need for acceptable statistical analysis. Too many so-called appraisers are misusing statistical theory and deriving very questionable results. The American ValueMetrics algorithm combines both statistical and heuristic evaluations techniques to derive valuations that can pass a "reality test."

The result are very comprehensible appraisal reports, with opinions of value that are well defended, and which also give the reader "comfort " in that the values are well reconciled to the marketplace.

American ValueMetrics Corp has also recognized that though it scrupulously adheres to the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice, that not all appraisals for various purposes may have the same needs. A valuation for a business owner to simply let him know what the market value is, versus a litigation appraisal which must not only defend an opinion of value to the satisfaction of a jury, but in many cases must refute a valuation, if deemed unreasonable or unreliable, by an opposing expert witness. Tailoring the appraisal to the use allows minimization of costs where savings are appropriate. For example, its "Level Two" appraisal was developed for most small business purposes, including business sales, financing (especially for SBA lenders) or buy-sell agreements.

To further enhance its credibility, American ValueMetrics Corp has developed a number of collaborating resources that provide special expertise where needed. These are individuals who are highly educated and who have extensive experience in various industries. They are not appraisers, as such, but contribute to the appraisal process where their expertise can be of benefit. These experts typically come from manufacturing, banking, accounting, business consulting, and business brokerage.

The result is that you will likely not find a bigger "bang for the buck" than by engaging American ValueMetrics Corp.
